At humedica e.V., we recognize that a strong and reliable healthcare system begins with a solid foundation—infrastructure. We are dedicated to strengthening Ethiopia’s health infrastructure by building and rehabilitating health facilities, improving water and hygiene systems, and equipping centers with life-saving medical tools. These interventions ensure that even the most remote and vulnerable communities have access to safe, dignified, and quality healthcare services.
Key Focus Areas:
Health Facility Construction & Rehabilitation
We construct and restore critical health infrastructure, including:
- Clinics, delivery rooms, and maternity waiting areas
- Health posts in remote areas where existing services are inadequate or destroyed
These structures create safe spaces for maternal care, emergency treatment, and general outpatient services, especially in underserved regions.
Medical Equipment & Supplies
We ensure that renovated facilities are not only functional but fully equipped with:
- Essential medicines, diagnostics, and laboratory supplies
- Tools for maternal care, pediatric support, and stabilization of malnourished children
This guarantees that health workers can deliver timely and quality care.
Financial Support
We provide start-up capital, including:
- Seed money and small business grants
- Assistance with opening bank accounts and joining savings groups
This financial kick-start helps individuals launch their ventures and build financial stability—often for the first time in their lives.
WASH Services (Water, Sanitation & Hygiene)
Improving hygiene is key to preventing disease and maintaining safe health environments. Our WASH infrastructure includes:
- Handwashing stations, latrines, and clean water supply systems
- Rehabilitation of water access points in and around health centers
These services reduce infection risk and promote safe, clean environments for patients and staff alike.
Impact in Action
Mekdes Wondimu
Mekdes tragically lost her first child after a 21km journey to the nearest health center ended in a fatal hemorrhage. During her second pregnancy, she stayed at a maternity waiting area constructed by humedica, allowing her to safely deliver her baby under medical supervision. Mekdes’s story reflects the life-saving impact of infrastructure development in maternal health.
Selawa & Bishoftu Health Centers
humedica renovated handwashing facilities at these two health centers, enhancing infection control and hygiene standards. These upgrades not only improve day-to-day care but also help protect healthcare providers and patients from disease transmission—especially in high-risk areas.
Haromaya Hospital Stabilization Centers
In 2023, humedica completed major renovations and new constructions at Haromaya Hospital’s stabilization centers. Alongside infrastructure upgrades, the hospital received donated medical equipment to treat Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) and Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) cases. As a result, the hospital now accommodates hundreds of malnourished children, vastly increasing its treatment capacity.
Kara Health Center & Jinka Coordination Office
To extend support to more communities in the South Omo Zone, humedica scaled up operations by establishing a coordination office in Jinka, the zone’s capital. This step has improved logistics, facilitated smoother implementation, and enabled more efficient delivery of healthcare services across remote areas.
Where We Work
Our infrastructure development projects are implemented across Ethiopia, with a focus on underserved and conflict-affected regions:
- South Omo Zone – Bena Tsemay, Hamer, Dassenech, Nyangatom
- Somali Region – Strengthening facility-based health services
- Afar Region – Chifra & Guyah districts
- Tigray, Amhara, and Afar – Emergency infrastructure for IDPs and host communities
These areas represent a mix of chronic vulnerability and acute crisis, where infrastructure support is not just helpful—it is critical.
A Foundation for Health, A Future of Hope
By investing in infrastructure, humedica is doing more than building walls—we’re building trust, restoring dignity, and creating environments where healthcare workers can thrive and patients can heal. Our commitment to long-term impact ensures that facilities remain functional, clean, and equipped, even in times of crisis.
Stronger infrastructure means stronger communities—and humedica is proud to be part of that transformation.
