Access to safe water and adequate sanitation is not just a basic human need—it’s a cornerstone of health, dignity, and resilience. In Ethiopia, humedica e.V. is leading efforts to bring clean water, improved sanitation, and life-saving hygiene practices to communities most at risk—including internally displaced persons (IDPs), returnees, and vulnerable host populations.
Our WASH programs are integrated into emergency response and long-term development initiatives, helping to prevent disease outbreaks, reduce health risks, and empower communities with the tools and knowledge to safeguard their well-being.
Key Initiatives:
Clean Water Access
humedica ensures families and health facilities have access to safe and reliable water sources by:
- Constructing shallow wells and rehabilitating damaged water systems, particularly in areas affected by conflict or climate shocks.
- Installing or repairing water supply systems at health centers to improve clinical hygiene and service delivery.
Distributing chlorine tablets and training communities on household water treatment to ensure safe drinking water at the point of use.
Sanitation & Hygiene Promotion
Behavior change is central to effective WASH interventions. humedica facilitates:
- Hygiene awareness sessions in schools, community gatherings, and health facilities.
- Household visits for personalized hygiene education and demonstration of good practices.
- Handwashing campaigns to promote proper techniques and the use of soap—critical for infection prevention, especially in high-risk environments.
Essential Hygiene Supplies
To reduce health risks and support dignity, humedica distributes:
- WASH Non-Food Items (NFIs) including soap, menstrual hygiene products, jerrycans, and buckets.
- Supplies and equipment for handwashing stations at health centers, schools, and public gathering points.
- Support for the renovation and construction of sanitation facilities in health posts and communal areas.
Community Feedback Mechanisms
Accountability is at the heart of our work. humedica:
- Establishes hotlines and phone call systems to gather feedback from beneficiaries.
- Installs suggestion boxes at health facilities and distribution points to ensure voices are heard and services continue to improve.
Where We Work
humedica’s WASH programs are active in some of Ethiopia’s most vulnerable regions, including:
- Northern Ethiopia (Amhara, Afar, and Tigray), where displacement and conflict have severely impacted access to clean water and sanitation.
- The Afar Region, one of the most arid parts of the country with critical WASH needs.
- Bishoftu, where urban-rural migration and infrastructure gaps make WASH access a growing concern.
Impact & Achievements
- Improved Hand Hygiene:
Our hygiene stations and IPC training have strengthened infection control practices in healthcare settings, reducing transmission risks. - Increased Community Awareness:
Widespread education efforts have resulted in behavioral changes, with communities now practicing safer hygiene routines daily. - Reduced Disease Transmission:
By increasing access to safe drinking water and promoting clean sanitation, humedica has helped to reduce waterborne diseases such as diarrhea and cholera. - Community Empowerment:
Our approach emphasizes community ownership—engaging local leaders, health workers, and volunteers in WASH planning and implementation to ensure sustainability and cultural relevance.
Challenges
- Funding & Integration Gaps:
While needs remain high, limited budgets make it difficult to sustain and scale WASH infrastructure and integrate it fully into health and nutrition services. - Sustained Education Needs:
Initial awareness campaigns must be reinforced over time. Continued hygiene promotion and capacity building are needed to maintain impact and prevent backsliding in hygiene practices.
A Lifeline for Health and Dignity
From emergency water trucking in drought zones to restoring sanitation at health posts destroyed by conflict, humedica’s WASH efforts are restoring dignity, preventing illness, and saving lives. By working hand-in-hand with communities and local authorities, we are laying the foundation for a healthier, more resilient Ethiopia—one safe drop at a time.
