Fighting Malnutrition

In regions where conflict, displacement, and climate challenges have disrupted food systems and healthcare, humedica e.V. is at the forefront of combating malnutrition. Our programs provide life-saving nutrition support to the most vulnerable—particularly children under the age of five and pregnant and lactating women (PLW)—while also building the foundations for healthier, more resilient communities.

We approach malnutrition not just as a health crisis, but as a challenge that requires comprehensive, community-based, and sustainable solutions.

Key Initiatives:

Nutrition Screening & Early Detection

Timely detection is critical. humedica’s frontline workers conduct routine screenings to identify cases of Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) and Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) among children and PLW. Identified cases are referred immediately to treatment programs, ensuring that support begins as early as possible.

Therapeutic & Supplementary Feeding

We provide ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) and supplementary feeding for moderate and severe cases. Families also receive essential food packages tailored to local dietary needs, helping them regain strength and stability during recovery.

Community Outreach & Awareness

Changing behaviors and attitudes requires community involvement. Our teams engage local leaders, health volunteers, and families in nutrition education sessions and mobilization campaigns—creating a collective effort to tackle malnutrition at its roots.

Food & Cash Assistance

In areas facing acute food shortages, we provide direct food support and cash-based assistance to families. This helps ensure that even those with no income can access the basic nutrition they need to survive and recover.

Where We Work

humedica implements integrated nutrition programs across East Africa—Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia—with concentrated efforts in South-Eastern Ethiopia, the Somali region, and Oromia. These areas face some of the highest rates of malnutrition due to climate shocks, displacement, and limited healthcare access.

Impact & Achievements

  • 120,000+ direct beneficiaries and over 385,000 indirect beneficiaries supported through our nutrition interventions.
  • Significantly reduced malnutrition rates among IDPs, returnees, and host communities.
  • Improved nutritional outcomes for children under the age of five and PLW, preventing long-term developmental setbacks.

Challenges on the Ground

  • Persistent Food Insecurity
Prolonged droughts, displacement, and economic instability leave families unable to meet basic food needs—putting children and mothers at extreme risk.
  • Seasonal Hardships
Lean seasons, inflation, and disrupted markets increase pressure on already vulnerable households, making consistent nutrition support essential.

Restoring Health, Building Resilience

humedica’s nutrition programs go beyond emergency response. We are building a future where mothers have the knowledge to nourish their children, communities are mobilized to fight hunger, and health systems are equipped to manage and prevent malnutrition for the long term.
Through our ongoing commitment, we are restoring health, dignity, and hope—one meal, one mother, and one child at a time.
