Economic Empowerment

At humedica e.V., we believe that long-term resilience begins with economic opportunity. Our economic empowerment programs are designed to break the cycle of poverty by equipping vulnerable individuals and families in Ethiopia with the tools, knowledge, and support they need to build sustainable and independent livelihoods.

From small business training to urban farming and financial inclusion, we help people—especially women and single-parent households—take confident steps toward self-reliance and economic security.

Key Focus Areas:

Skills & Business Development

We offer hands-on training in entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and business planning, enabling participants to start and grow income-generating activities. This foundational knowledge empowers individuals to turn ideas into viable businesses, manage resources effectively, and plan for a better future

Urban Agriculture

In urban and peri-urban areas, we promote sustainable agriculture at the household level. Participants receive:

  • Training in home gardening and poultry farming
  • Seeds, tools, and starter kits to grow vegetables or rear chickens
These initiatives help families improve food security, reduce household costs, and create income through small-scale sales.

Financial Support

We provide start-up capital, including:

  • Seed money and small business grants
  • Assistance with opening bank accounts and joining savings groups
This financial kick-start helps individuals launch their ventures and build financial stability—often for the first time in their lives.

Community Development

Beyond economic support, we work to improve overall well-being by supporting:

  • Hygiene and sanitation projects
  • Educational initiatives for children and youth

These efforts help create an enabling environment for growth, particularly in undeserved urban neighborhoods.

Impact Stories

Adanech

After attending humedica’s Business Skills Training, Adanech received a 10,000 birr grant to start a coffee and bread sales business in her community. Thanks to her hard work and consistent support, she now saves 100 birr daily, supporting her family and planning to expand her business.

Dunbulo

A single mother of several children, Dunbulo initially received emergency food support from humedica. This allowed her children to return to school consistently. With further support, she began saving between 500 and 1,000 birr per month, building a foundation for future income generation and stability.

Hika

Hika participated in humedica’s urban agriculture training and received start-up materials to begin vegetable cultivation and poultry farming. The project not only increased household nutrition but also created a new income stream that helped stabilize their finances and build confidence.

Amina Yusuf

Amina, a proactive member of a Voluntary Saving and Loan Association (VSLA), used humedica’s support to diversify her income. She now engages in goat fattening and multiple small businesses, including selling clothes, charcoal, and coffee, significantly improving her household’s income and independence.

Where We Work

humedica implements its Family Sponsorship and Community Development programs in key urban and semi-urban centers:

  • Addis Ababa – Lideta & Addis Ketema sub-cities
  • Bishoftu – Oromia Region
  • Jigjiga – Somali Region

These regions represent diverse economic and social contexts, allowing us to tailor interventions to meet specific community needs.

Empowering Women & Girls

Economic empowerment is a pathway to gender equality. humedica’s programs prioritize women’s inclusion through:

  • Leadership and financial training
  • Dedicated support for single mothers
  • Resources to launch and scale businesses

By promoting economic independence, we’re enabling women to make informed decisions, support their families, and become leaders within their communities.

Lasting Change Through Opportunity

Through a combination of skills training, financial access, and targeted livelihood support, humedica is helping families build a stronger future. Our economic empowerment initiatives are not just about income—they are about dignity, confidence, and hope.

Together, we are transforming lives—one small business, one garden, one empowered family at a time.
